Malaysia
Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country spanning parts of the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo, known for its beaches, rainforests, and a rich blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European cultural influences. The capital, Kuala Lumpur, features colonial buildings, bustling shopping districts like Bukit Bintang, and iconic skyscrapers such as the 451m-tall Petronas Twin Towers. On the west coast, Malacca offers a glimpse of Chinese-Malay Peranakan culture, while Langkawi is famous for its beach resorts, and Penang’s George Town charms with temples and street-food stalls.

The east coast of Peninsular Malaysia is known for beach resorts and diving hotspots like Tioman, Redang, and the Perhentian Islands. Malaysian Borneo is largely covered in tropical rainforest with diverse wildlife, including orangutans, and offers scenic beaches, scuba diving at Sipadan, and access to Kota Kinabalu, the gateway to Mount Kinabalu.

Nasi lemak
Nasi lemak is a fragrant Malay rice dish cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves. Widely regarded as Malaysia’s national dish, it is also popular in Singapore, Brunei, and southern Thailand.

Roti Canai
Roti canai itself is a main dish. It’s a soft, yet flaky flatbread that is served warm and with different sauces. From our experience, the sauces that are served alongside roti canai were dhal, which is a lentil curry, a spicy red curry and sometimes a plain yogurt.

Sambal
Sambal is a spicy chili sauce commonly served alongside nasi campur. There are many varieties, but the bright red sambal belacan, made with fermented fish paste, is a favorite for its bold flavor without being overly fishy. This fiery condiment is an essential part of Malaysian cuisine, and its preparation is traditionally considered a test of culinary skill in some families.
